Roger van Zandvoort was born in Holland in 1958. From a very early age he had a passionate interest in nature and was an avid collector. He started a butterfly collection at seven and at fourteen, hoping his collection of more than one hundred cacti would have the ideal cold and dry environment they needed to bloom, slept with the windows open through a Dutch winter.
